Do you have any other perl monitors that are working with RRD? (apcmon, armon, bgpmon, bpmon, ciscomon, snmpmon, sqlmon, syslogon, upsmon... just to name a few). You can try toggling debug to 2 or more in hostmon and restarting it... that may not print the RRDTOOL setting, though. Myself, I've sometimes just retyped the config lines to try to get rid of any hidden characters in there (such as a hidden character and backspace or the like), as the regular expression, while not case or whitespace sensitive, might be catching something else.
